The first in a three part documentary series following Nick Kemp of Human Alchemy has just been rolled out onto youTube. These behind the scenes documentaries are another example of the kind of work we do. Professionals like Nick, are keen to work with us because we understand what it is they want to achieve. In this case Nick wanted a very organic feeling documentary, literally where we follow him with a camera and produce an "honest - what you see is what you get" take on how he produces audio CD products and his influences. Anyone who is interested in the Human Alchemy Hypnosis CD's will find this fascinating.

It's been a great week with lots of hard copy design work and also editing. What I've really enjoyed is having clients come into the office so that we can evolve the designs with them present. A good example was Helen Porter & Mr John Divison, from Evolution Skin Studios who popped in for a few hours yestarday. Working directly with them meant we were able to finalise the layout, font style, colour, graphics and images for their new trifold price leaflet. Because they could see the changes as they were made it sped the whole creative process up and gave them and us more creative headroom.

Doing Things Differently - Quicker, Better Design

Of course it helps to have the right equipment. We have a main display that is 30inches (2560x1600) wide with amazing colour and contrast so everyone in the room can see what's going on. It's a smart way to work.

Another good example was Emily Rose who popped by to work on her new business cards. Because we met face to face and took the time to find out more about her business, we quickly came up with a completely new design concept for her and the results are looking great! Well show you the finished product soon :)

Nick Kemp is a smart cookie. He knows a thing or two about getting people's attention. He's also, without doubt, one of the best hypnotherapists out there. At Spartmedia, we've just finished making 25 short online HD movies for him to put into his website nickkemp.com. These videos are only 1 to 2 mins long and cover a range of conditions that he treats: phobias, anxiety, addictions etc.

We should have had a bet to see which one would get the most hits on youTube: but really there's no surprises: it's the one on "Helping people get rid of their Cannabis Addictions". We've put the video on here for you to see.

From a media point of view this video has some cool stuff going on:

The use of black background really works well on his site and creates a sense of depth

We've got rid of the old style splash title and instead we've created a more modern logo animation (look out for the three spheres!)

It's a really nice example of adding value to a website by putting videos describing the services offered - which really increases uptake

The closing credits feature our new logo

Many of our clients ask us to produce movies specifically for the web. These are usually hosted on YouTube or Vimeo. The obvious advantage is that this puts the video instantly at the fingertips of literally millions of potential clients!

A good example is Pink Ink Tattoos who back in March 2009 asked us to produce a short promotional movie for their tattooing service. The video started off with a modest following of about 10 hits per day. Now it's 6 months on and the video has been viewed over 2,000 times! That's 2,000 potential clients! But the really cool thing is that the number of views this video is getting is steadily increasing. It now gets over 20 views a day! and when you look at the graph below (from youTube) you can see that the trend is that this video is constantly increasing in hits.

The Video is Increasing Hits to the Website

When we look at the website analytics we see that 20% of the traffic comes from direct and indirect referrals (links people follow) associated with the video!

So How Are Increased Website Hits Achieved?

People find the video on youTube and then follow the link to the website

We put the video on facebook and other social networking sites and that created lots of interest and links to the website

We embedded the video into the clients website - which makes a great impression on clients when they visit

Other people start adding a link to the video on forums and this drives traffic to youTube which in turn drives traffic to the website

What Other Benefits are Clients Getting with Online Movies?

Probably one of the other biggest benefits to online movies is building a reputation and profile. So when people think of tattoos they think of Pink Ink Tattoos because they really liked the video they saw. And when you get professional movies in your site it makes people think "These guys are serious!", which is a good thing ;)

It's an exciting day today at the Spartmedia office... working closely with Sparticle Limited our sister company, we're rolling out our new and dare I say very cool Spartmedia website. The new site really demonstrates how videos, multimedia and the internet are coming together... really websites are a way of bringing together media and information.

Now that most people have high enough bandwidth to stream music and videos over the interweb then people who have websites are starting to really make the most and put videos and media downloads on their sites. But it's not just about being funky... what it's really about is social marketting. Standing out from the crowd and letting your prospective clients know that you are better than the rest!

So take a look around the site, I'd love to get your feedback so send me a quick response. And check out the new features... plus there's a lot more useful information about the filmmaking process.

So when they approached us and asked us to film and produce the intro movie we were naturally excited... but how do you create an equally bizarre and unusual movie... well it helps sometimes to Stop once in a while... or more accurately about 300 times in half a minute! We've got two machines here running 24/7 to convert the High Def footage ready for editing. We're putting this footage together with the footage we filmed for him last summer in Rome to make a promotional movie for his Ride Italy motorbike tours company... watch this space.

This is an interesting project because it brings together footage from two tours shot on 3 different cameras. But we've got the technology to bring it all together :) the biggest challenge is to go through the 14+ hours of footage and edit it down to about 2 mins! :)

At Sparticle limited we use the highest spec professional cameras, microphones, SLRs and post production hardware and software like Cannon, Nikon and Sennheiser. Often though our clients will contact us saying "we've got some footage on our Sony HDR camera but we can't seem to do anything with the footage can you help please?" Well the good news is we can.

Here are the steps to using your sony HDR camcorder MTS files and converting them into AVI, MOV, or MPG files so you can use them in software like Windows Movie Maker or Final Cut Pro etc.

Download a copy of iSkysofts iMedia Converter software

Plug the camcorder into your PC/Mac and switch it on - it should then prompt you to establish a USB connection.

Copy the files from the camera to the computer (you do this using finder or windows explorer)

Rename the extension on the files from MTS to M2TS

Start up the iSkysoft program and hit the "add files" button to add the files to the queue

Adjust the settings to suit your needs - if you're shooting in High Def then you'll want to set the size to 1920 by 1080 or 1440 by 1078 - read the manual on your camera to find out what it records at. Play around with the settings on a short test file first until you get the results you want.

If you've got more than one hard drive (disk) in your computer then it's a good idea to choose an output folder on a different drive from the one that has the source files on as it will speed things up a little.

Make sure the "Merge into one file" option is unchecked

Hit the big "convert" button

A converter window will pop up showing you the progress. It's a good idea to select the "Hide Preview" option as this will speed things up too.

Now sit back - go and make a cup of tea and be prepared to leave the computer on over night! we've got a machine with 18Gb of RAM, 8 Processors and 5 Terrabytes of storage and it takes about an hour to process a Gb of footage. This software doesn't seem to make use of multiple processors.

Let me know how you get on ;)
